Cheltenham Races, Gold Cup circa 1968. Chief Constable E.P.B. White, Her Majesty the Queen Mother & Police Sergeant 520 Peter Hillier. Martyn Hillier tells the following story. My father joined on 29th October 1949 and was a issued a “new number”, by which I mean previously unissued; 520. When I joined I was issued 1144. Sadly shortly afterwards my father died and at the funeral the Chief Constable asked my mother and I if I would like my father’s number. Naturally we said yes, so I changed numbers. The Shire Hall payroll system had a problem with this, which to be fair, was a pretty unusual set of circumstances. As a consequence my pay the next month was rather good; top rate Sergeant with full Rent Allowance. The next month, after deduction of the overpayment, I had something like £5 !!
