Constabulary Office Cheltenham 1 December 1845 Order An additional constable is to be sent to patrol Montpellier and Lansdown every Sunday afternoon until dusk and is to be directed to caution any parties whom he may see smoking cigars in the Montpellier Walk not to do so as Mr Pearson Thompson the owner of the property will not permit it. An intelligent constable must be selected for this duty who must be cautioned to speak in a civil courteous manner to the above parties and if they persist in smoking after they are cautioned the constable is not to interfere further with them. Group of Police Officers entitled originals taken outside St. Matthews Church Cheltenham early 1870s. According to an informed source it isn't St. Matthew's Church in the background, it is the massive corrugated iron temporary Parish Church, built to hold a congregation of 1500 whilst urgent structural repairs were carried out on St. Mary's. Eventually it was moved to a site in St. George's Road and St Matthew's was built on its site. The temporary church ended its days (rather improbably) as a railway carriage shed at Lydney Junction for the Severn and Wye Railway. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 32)

I believe my Great Grandfather Henry Boulton may well be in this photo. He was Constable 1817 stationed at Cheltenham in 1872. Sadly I have no photos of him to compare. He was living in the Police Station single men’s quarters but married that year.
Charles Mason, born Prestbury Glos 1825, joined Gloucestershire police age 25, he served as police constable at several stations ending up in Fairford as a sergeant, he was stationed there from 1851, promoted to sergeant on 4th June 1863, until retirement. He was superannuated on 19-1-1886 at £43-10-0d per year.
