Gloucestershire Centenary of Women Police Officers

1918 to 2018

These women would have been serving at the National Filling Factory in Quedgeley at this time. Several of the women in this photo appear in the first constabulary photos of women officers. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 2112)

In 1918, Gloucestershire Constabulary appointed women to serve as police officers for the first time.

Since then much has changed including of course the appointment of a female Chief Constable.

Next year, we want to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women policing our county by including your memories.

  • Are you related to one of the first women officers?
  • Were you one of the first women to serve in a department or at a certain rank?
  • What changes have you seen in the role of female officers during your service?
  • Did you work on a high profile investigation?
  • Is there a particular female officer you remember – and why?
  • Do you remember the old Women’s Department (and the Austin Mini they used to drive around in)?

These might be your own experiences or those of a relative or friend – we would love to hear about them.

If you can help us put together the story of how the role of female officers in Gloucestershire has evolved please get in touch.
