Caroline Symes

A plea for help

Woman Police Constable Caroline Symes who died as the result of a riding accident in June 1977 - aged 20. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 1220-1)

Caroline Symes joined Gloucestershire Constabulary on 3rd September 1975.

She died after falling from her horse while off duty on 13th June 1977.

We have recently had a request about her career from a member of her family and so we are trying to find officers who knew her and  might have photographs taken at the time or have memories of serving with her.

We would also like to know Caroline’s collar number which we do not have a record of and is not visible in the photographs that we have.

If you can help you can contribute here.

Thank you Tim Nash for the following information

I was on the same shift as Caroline during her time at Cirencester, as was Paul Miller, Dave Hemmings and  our Sergeant was if I recall correctly,  John Head. Paul, Dave and I were bearers at her funeral .
Caroline was a very studious, quiet girl, and lodged in a home not far from my police house, in Golden Farm Road. We were on early shift when we heard the devastating news of her passing. I am unable to recall her collar number. I recall one night shift when she and I Caught two prolific burglars who had just burgled the home of an old age pensioner and left her in fear for her life. We were both probationers at the time, but under the circumstances the two burglars were no match.

  • I vaguely knew Caroline during her time in Gloucester.
Her Collar number was 82 – at the time female officers had a separate numbering series.

Her Tutor was I believe PC (later Insp) Ted KANIA.

At the time of her tragic death I believe she had moved from Gloucester
