You are never sure where a request for information will end up leading you.

At the Force Open Day in 2019 one of our Police Community Support Officers, Pete Timmins based at Coleford, asked for information about his great grandfather who served as a Police Constable between 1906 and 1911.

Thomas Neems had been a soldier and fought in the Boer War. His great grandson thought that he left the constabulary to fight in the First World War.

In the strong room at the Heritage Hub we found Thomas’s personnel file and found out that he was dismissed for neglect of duty.

Thomas had been in trouble about a year before when he took too long returning to his station at Beckford after taking a prisoner  to Gloucester.

Then a year later  he was reported for failing to leave his check ticket at the appointed place and then making a false entry in his notebook about the event.
