Report on Condition of Police Stations 1857 A-C

Some words are difficult to read so there a few blanks.

Almondsbury. This station faces the road leading from Bristol to Newport and Gloucester and is well situate. It is distant 7 mles from Lawfords Gate 6 miles from Westbury on trym and 6 miles from Aust. The state of repair is very bad and the premises are very old. The premises are unsuitable and cannot be made fit. No cell here. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10093)
Ashleworth. This station is at Ashleworth Green central and commands the cross roads. It is distant 6 miles from Gloucester 7 miles from Newent and 8 miles from Coombe Hill station. The premises are in good repair. They contain 2 rooms a washhouse and 2 beds rooms. No strong room or cell. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10094)
Aust. This station is detached and situate on the cliff at Aust and commands the old passage and approach to the inn. It is distant 6 miles from Thornbury and 6 miles from Westbury. State of repair good, the accommodation is at present insufficient but there are facilities for making such additions and alterations as would render the premises suitable. Beckford. This station is situate in the centre of the village near the church and highway leading from Beckford to Tewkesbury. It is distant 6 miles from Tewkesbury 6 miles from Winchcombe and 5 miles from Cleeve station. It is an old ......... built house with a thatched roof and in miserable repair and quite unfair for a police station . No cell here or strong room. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10096)
Berkeley. The station faces the main road leading to Gloucester opposite and within 100 yards of the Berkeley Arms and is central and convenient. The house is in a pretty good state of repair. The guard room is insufficient the other accommodation too limited and the back premises open to houses adjoining – the wash house being common to them and the yard unenclosed and the sewage defective. Bibury. This station is in a commanding position and overlooks the main road from Cirencester to Burford. It is distant 4½ miles from Fairford 6 miles from Northleach and 7 miles from Cirencester. The premises are in tolerably good repair the accommodation is too limited having but one room on the ground floor one bedroom and an inferior all in one cell or strong room. Bishops Cleeve. This station faces the road leading from Cheltenham to Evesham it is open on one side and a cottage adjoins on the other . it is distant 5 miles from Cheltenham 5 miles from Winchcomb and 6 miles from Tewkesbury. It is weakly built and in a bad state of repair and unsuitable for a station, no cell. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10099)
Bisley. This station is situate on the main road leading from Bisley to Stroud. It is distant 4 miles from Minchinhampton 4 miles from Stroud and 7 miles from Mickleton. The premises are in good repair they contain 2 rooms a washhouse 2 bedrooms and an allie. No cell. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10100)
Blakeney. This station is not in a good site and is completely overlooked both in the front and rear. Blakeney is distant 8 miles from Coleford and 4 miles from Lydney. The premises are old and in bad repair the rooms low and small and possessing no facility for adaptations and alterations and without any cell. No yard and a bad supply of water. Bouton on the Water. This station is in the village of Bourton but not well situated. It is distant 5 miles from Northleach and 4 miles from Stow on the Wold. The state of repair is bad. The premises unsuitable ...... with other cottages and without privacy. The owner will not make any outlay. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10102)
Charlton Kings. The station is situate facing the High Road leading from the Cheltenham and Cirencester into Cheltenham and London Road and is distant 2 miles from Cheltenham. The state of repair is good but the premises are too confined and unsuitable for alteration. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10104)
Chedworth. This station is in a central situation in the village and commands the principal road, it is open on one side and has a cottage adjoining it on the other. It is 4½ miles from Northleach, 7 miles from Cirencester and 12 ½ miles from Cheltenham. The main parts of this house are substantial but repairs are needed to the roof spouting and windows. The cottage has two rooms, on the ground floor washhouse and shed 2 bedrooms and 2 attics, enclosed garden and privy. A good supply of water from a spring 20 yards from the station. Cheltenham. The station house is central, situated in St Georges Place leading out of the High Street convenient for the public offices and the Great Western Railway Station. The state of repair is good. The number and size of the rooms very inadequate. Parade Ground, Stable and Court House sufficient. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10106)
Chipping Campden. The station house is conveniently situated at the corner of the road leading to the church and facing the road from Broadway to Campden distant from Moreton 7 miles and from Stow 10 miles. The front part of the house is nearly new and is in a good state of repair, the back parts old and in bad repair. The accommodation is sufficient for the Superintendent but that for the sergeant and constables insufficient. There are 2 cells insecure and too confined and badly maintained. Chipping Sodbury. This station house is situate facing the road leading from the cross hands to Bristol and through out of the centre of town is tolerably convenient. The state of repair is insufficient . The accommodation is much too limited for four constables and none for sergeant or married constable. There is a secure cell. These premises being built up on both sides and confined at the back do not afford further additions. The extent of the accommodation required is similar to that directed for the other superintendent stations. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10143)
Churcham. This station faces the road from Gloucester to Ross and abuts on one side to the end of the Wesleyan Chapel at Birdwood. It is distant 5 ½ miles from Gloucester, 5 miles from Littledean and 6 miles from Newent. The premises are suitable and in good repair. There are 2 rooms pantry back kitchen and washhouse on the ground floor 3 bedrooms and an alllie. No strong room. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10108)
Cirencester. The station is in Gloucester street ½ a mile from the Town Hall built up on both sides objectionably situated deficient in light and air any damp badly drained and close to a slaughter house, the buildings are old and in a bad state of repair and the accommodation insufficient excepting as relates to that for the superintendent only and are incapable of being made suitable. Coleford. The station house is situate in a central part of the town and faces the road from Mitcheldean and Littledean to Coleford is 7 miles from Littledean and 5 miles from Monmouth. The premises are generally in a fairly good state of repair except one roof. There is ample space in the premises to make a suitable station but at present they are inconveniently arrayed The cell here is small, dark and insecure. A garden and stable are attached. Coombe Hill. This station faces the main road leading from Tewkesbury to Gloucester between which towns it is about midway. The house is in good repair the accommodation sufficient and convivially arranged. No cell. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10111)
