Report on Condition of Police Stations 1857 M-P

Some words are difficult to read so there a few blanks.

Marshfield. This station faces the road leading from Bristol to Chippenham and is built up on both sides. It is distant from Pucklechurch 7 miles Oldland Common 8 miles and Hewlesfield 6 miles. The premises are old and in bad repair and the owner will not expend any money on it. There is a good cell here. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10128)
Minchinhampton. This station is in the centre of the town near the church. It is distant 5 miles from Tetbury 4 miles from Bisley and 4 miles from Nailsworth. These premises are old unnecessarily large and rambling being part of the old malt house in bad repair dilapidated and unsuitable and not proper facilities for conversion no cell but there are 2 docks used at the town hall occasionally used by the police. Mitcheldean. This station is central and near the church but in a side street leading out of the high street is distant from Newnham 6 miles, Coleford 9 miles, Lydbrook 6 miles Littledean 5 miles The state of repair is good. There is a cell here but not sufficiently large or secure. There are two rooms pantry and washhouse on the ground floor and 3 bedrooms over. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10130)
Moreton in Marsh. This station is in the centre of the town and on one side of the road leading from Stow and Moreton to Warwick. It is 4 miles from Stow and 9 miles from Campden. The house is in good repair but the back part not ???built . these premises are too confined to make the required cells and there is a ???? of the property being interfered with in making a road to the store. Nailsworth. This station is situate on the upper portion of the village. It is distant from Tetbury 6 miles and from Stroud 4 ½ miles. The premises are in faily good repair they contain 3 rooms a washhouse an insecure lock up 3 small bedrooms and 2 allies. The court and privy are open to other cottages. Nettleton. This station is situated on the side of the road leading from Cirencester to Gloucester and half way between these towns is convenient and in a good state of repair. There are 2 rooms and a washhouse on the ground floor and two bedrooms on the 1st floor which are cold in winter and hot in the summer from the rafters not having been ceiled. Walls damaged on one side from ground being above the level of the floor. No cell or strong room here. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10133)
Newent. This station is just outside the town facing the road from Newent to Dymock and is a detached house. It is distant 9 miles from Gloucester, 7 miles from Mitcheldean and 4 miles from Dymock. It is nearly new well-built and in good repair and contains 4 rooms on the ground floor good cellar 4 bedrooms and an attic. No cell better if more central. Newnham. This station is situate nearly opposite the Bear Inn in the lower part of the town and is 12 miles from Gloucester and 4 miles from Blakeney. The premises are very old the rooms very low back premises confined and dire need of privacy and the whole accommodation unsuitable and unconvertible. Northleach. This station is situate on the high street of the town of Northleach about half a mile to the south of correction. It has houses on both sides of it and a small enclosure round at the back. It is distant from Cheltenham 13 miles and from Stow 9 miles. The state of the repair is substantial and good. The rooms sufficient in number though somewhat small. There are 2 bedrooms and 2 allies. A cell upstairs close under a tiled roof and very insecure. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10136)
Oldland Common. This station faces the road from Pucklechurch to Bristol and is set back about 20 yards from the road. It is distant 4 miles from Bristol and 4 miles from st Georges. The state of repair is good. The accommodation suitable and convenient and a good cell is here. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10137)
Painswick. This is situate near the Church but in a lane westward of the road from Stroud to Painswick. It is distant from Stroud 4 miles and from Gloucester 7 miles. The premises are old in bad repair and unsuitable as the owner will not make any repairs or alterations. No cell. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10138)
Pucklechurch. This station is close to the road leading from Dyrham to Bristol and about ½ a mile from the village of Pucklechurch, it is distant from Staple Hill 3 miles and 7 miles from Chipping Sodbury. It is detached and in good repair. There are two rooms washhouse pantries on the ground floor and three bedrooms. There is a stable at one end of the building no cell. The premises being lifehold the owner will not make any alterations. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10139)
Purton. This is one of two cottages close to the road leading from Berkley to Purton Passage and is distant 4 miles from Berkley and ½ mile from Purton Passages. The premises are in good repair. There is a small kitchen and back kitchen on the ground floor the privy and drain at the back are offensive. 1 bedroom and 1 office. No cell. (Gloucestershire Police Archives URN 10141)
