Alfred Cooke

Warrant No 3130, Joined 02nd May 1887 age 19, Height 6ft 1/2 in, Occupation Asylum Attendant, Born Tidenham,  Gloucestershire.

Promoted Sergeant 21st April 1901.
Promoted Inspector 1st  November 1905.                                                                                                                               Promoted 2nd Class Superintendent 1st May 1919

His police service included being stationed in Cheltenham, South Cerney, Minchinhampton, Nailsworth, Kingswood, Chipping Campden  and Staple Hill. Spent much of the final years of his police career in Bristol Division.

According to The Echo on Monday 29th July 1946 he was the brother of Superintendent Edward Cooke. They were part of a family of ten and the five brothers all became policemen while two of the sisters married policemen. He was born in a Gloucestershire police station.

From the Commendation and Default books

31st  July 1887 being under the influence of drink when on night duty at Cheltenham.
Fined 3 days pay 1st August 1887. Henry Christian.

12th March 1894 Neglect of duty in slowing Police Constable  Boucher to proceed from Kemble to Gloucester whilst escorting prisoner after he saw he (Boucher) was under the influence of drink.
He is fined two days pay. 17th March 1894 Henry Christian.

22nd February  1904 complimented by the justices for the manner in which he traced and arrested Samuel Harvey stealing 4 fowls and sentenced to 3 months Henry Christian.

30th April 1908 arresting William Clarke when on night duty at Kingswood for factory breaking. He was committed to the assizes .

His pension was secured from 4th February 1918 when he achieved the age of 50 and completed 28 years of service. He was allowed to remain in the force subject to an annual medical.

Pensioned 30th April 1928.

Died 23rd July 1946.
